University of Michigan Museum of Art
This on-campus museum underwent a $41.9 million expansion in 2009 and their extensive collection includes work from Asian, African, American, European, Middle Eastern and modern artists. They display everything from ancient pottery to early photography and outdoor sculpture. The museum also conducts research into reclaiming works that were illegally appropriated during World War II and they make information on this interesting project available to the public.
Exhibit Museum of Natural History
If you are interested in dinosaurs and fossils, this is the perfect destination. The Exhibit Museum of Natural History has four floors of exhibits including the largest display of dinosaurs in Michigan. They also have informative displays on wildlife, anthropology, geology, and you can visit the Planetarium to learn about the farthest reaches of space as well. Highly recommended.
This recently renovated museum houses a collection of nearly 100,000 objects from the civilizations of the Mediterranean and Near East. The amazing building is packed with attractions and will truly transport you back into time. They offer educational programs for children and adults as well as museum tours and lectures.
Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library
A great tribute to Michigan’s American president, the Gerald R. Ford library includes candid insight into his life and beliefs. The 12,000 building harbors a collection of historical artifacts that illustrate his presidency and includes exhibitions such as a sound and lightshow dedicated to a day in the Oval Office as well a Watergate Scandal display, which features the actual tools used in the burglary.
